Farewell CAS -> Nashville -> Puerto Rico -> London
|
|
postcard from fadli:
| Quote: | Rakan rakan & Sahabat Handai
after 3 years and 4 months being part of the Corporate Audit Staff of GE, the time has finally come for me to graduate. And as usual, we are now attending the CAS Conference, this time being in Nashville, Tennessee.
Few interesting points:
* Nashville is the Capital of American Country Music. As soon as you land at the airport, that's all you read and see about.
* The CMA ( Country Music Award) will be held in November and already it's all over the billboard
* Memphis is 3 hours away....main attraction being Graceland, Elvis Presley's home. I did not have a chance to go there this time. Just a few weeks ago a thousands of people gathered here to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the King's death.
* The "Southern" food is very much different from the typical American food that u get either in the Northeast or in the West...Everything is Fried...Even Pickles are fried !....Itu memang tak pernah jumpa
* We are staying at what has to be, undoubtedly, the BIGGEST EVER HOTEL I have ever been in....It's called the GAYLORD Opryland, it has > 2,200 Rooms divided into 5 Main AREAS...Don't ask me about the weird name...have no idea.
* No kidding, we get lost all the time going from one place to the other, It's like a small TOWN on its own...even has an ISLAND within the HOTEL with a canal where you can ride a boat on. It reminds me a bit of the Venetian in Las Vegas or the other super huge large hotels in LV.
* I am attaching some photos taken from my room to give you an idea of how HUGE this place is.
* On Monday, we had the Graduation Ceremony. Approximately 35 people are graduating this time. On Monday evening, CAS hired a whole venue with a Live Band that played all the famous country music songs. As could be imagined, there was a big area in front of the stage where you can do the LINE DANCE, i.e. rows of people doing dance steps in-synch with the music being played...a bit like Dikir Barat, but standing.

What next:
* Most of GE's CFO's, Risk leaders, HR Managers come to Conference for the Career Fair on the last day to Recruit CAS Graduates into joining their respective businesses.
* These include GE Aviation, GE Healthcare, GE Money, Oil & Gas, Energy, Commercial Finance, Corporate Financial Services, NBC Universal etc. There are approximately 30 tables in the Ballroom with each table having 1-2 Interviewers.
* Last week, we all have already chosen which ones we are interested in talking to and which businesses we are contemplating of joining after this. The CFO / HR manager etc will then spend 20-25 minutes selling their business and the roles they have for u and vice versa. At exactly 30 minutes, Time is UP and you move on to the Next Table.
* Seriously, like SPEED DATING show that you see on the Reality shows.
* I interviewed with mainly with the Capital side of GE rather than Industrial; i.e. Commercial Finance, Real Estate, GE Private Equity, Energy Financial Services, Corporate Financial Services, NBCU & Oil & Gas.
* After 10 interviews from 8.30 - 3.30, we were all practically tired and ready to take a rest....kepala otak dah tepu with information. Difficult to absorb another one.
* Several factors have to be taken into account on deciding our next role:
* 1) Function...Finance or Risk or BD etc
* 2) Location... Americas, Europe, Asia or Middle East...some people are very specific...Like myself, I have stated the intention of not wanting to work in America which makes the options available much limited.
* The best thing about this is the flexibility and the opportunity to do whatever you want given the size of GE.
* Main advantage is cases where the CFO or Senior Finance Manager is someone that you used to work for in CAS and if they liked you from before, you practically get the verbal offer on the spot and it is just a question of you wanting it or not.
* They have organized a European Career Fair in London next Friday...Something very similar to the one here in Nashville but with the majority of the CFO's being from Europe businesses.
Tomorrow:
* 6 of us from Malaysia are going to PUERTO RICO for 5 days, the land of J-Lo & Ricky Martin...saje cuti jalan jalan...lepak at the beach and taking some time off before the others start their next rotation Kick Off.
* I personally have heard great things about this place from my other American CAS friends who have been there many times in the past...Hopefully it will live up to its expectations.
* The flight is at Blardy 7 AM which means have to leave this place at 5AM which means I better not sleep and just lepak with friends until morning....If not, sure terlajak tidur and will miss the flight.
That is the update so far, CAS gives us 8 weeks of full pay to look for our next roles in GE...Hopefully will be able to start right after Hari Raya.
Regards from Nashville,
Fadli Riza Ramli |
